Written by Chairman - Dr Barrie Hopson
Adel Association Meeting February 18th in Adel Church
Many Adel residents went to the splendid talk on Anglo-Saxon & Norman Builders by Professor Joyce Hill, Emeritus Professor at the University of Leeds and former Pro-Vice-Chancellor. I am delighted to report that she is prepared to give another illustrated talk on the recently discovered Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet treasure’ - the Staffordshire Hoard - on February 18. Joyce has some fascinating background to this topic.
This will be in the Church at 7.30 followed by a very short Association meeting. Proceeds again will be for the Adel Church Belfry fund. The Adel Association is promoting this as the Church is an important part of our historical heritage.
Tickets are £5 and are available from the Church, at the door on the night or from Sylvia Halliday at 2671708 or or Beryl Thompson on 2673875 or

Community Space Project - November update
Written by Publisher
The first meeting of the project team (and representatives of West North West Homes) has now taken place to consider the plans designed by Groundworks, kindly funded by West North West Homes (WNWH). The proposal has addressed most of the concerns which were expressed by those attending the public meeting in May or passed on to the project team since that date.
Friends of Adel Woods is open to everyone who wants to:
• help maintain the beautiful woods on our doorstep
• make new friends
• enjoy the countryside
Since forming in July 2009 they have cleared paths, erected bird boxes and removed over 60 bags of rubbish plus assorted large items such as beer barrels, a burnt out supermarket trolley, car parts and a plastic chair!
If you would like to help look after the woods, make new friends and enjoy the local countryside, come along! All welcome! Friends of Adel Woods is a member of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.
The Adel Conservation area, which covers the area surrounding St John’s Church, looks set for a major extension following a review carried out by the Council’s development department. The present Conservation Area, comprises a number of Adel’s older buildings including the listed church itself, the Old Rectory, The Parish Hall and York Gate, together with its famous garden createdby the Spencer family.
Under the proposals, the Conservation Area will be extended southwards to include many of the older buildings on the east side of Church Lane like the old Adel School, Church Lane Lodge and Causeway House off Long Causeway.
