History Group events:

Saturday June 12

10.00 am Walk to Paul's Pond and Cockerhill Farm with Val Crompton.

Meet at the Otley Road Car Park - near the underpass.

(my apologies - I will be at a Thoresby Society research day on WW1)

Wednesday 28th July

7.00 pm (note time - notified 7.30 originally) for a history walk around Lawnswood Cemetery. Meet at the Otley Road entrance (opposite the much enlarged car park). It is difficult to judge length - we will concentrate mainly on the Victorian section behind the chapels (some wonderful memorials).  The war memorial garden will be visited also - but people could opt out of this as it makes for a much longer walk.

Wednesday 11th August

6.45pm at The Stables (car share) or 7.00pm Mount House for a history walk around Eccup with Richard Hainsworth. This is will be a couple of miles in length and mainly easy walking. Please book either with Richard and Debbie on 0113 2611769 ( ) or myself (see bottom of newsletter).

Other events

Also there are still places for the two-day Yorkshire Archaeological Society event "Adel Church and its Setting" on Sat 10th July (£10) at Claremont, 23 Clarendon Road, Leeds (10-4.30) and the Sunday visit to Adel  (£5) 10.30 am. Book with Stephen Moorhouse - 01924 475618.

12 June: University of Bradford are doing a Crime and Policing in Victorian England day school at Ripon (£18.50 which includes entry to the Courthouse & the Police Museums. For details email

I believe there is to be an archaeology week in the City Museum in July - but have no details. The Leeds Library trip was cancelled, but arrangements made for an interested person to visit on another day was made. They will be participating in the Heritage Weekend event on Sat 11th September.

Behind the scenes:

1. Check out www.ukniwm.org.uk - the UK National Inventory of War Memorials collated by the Imperial War Museum. Adel Church's war memorial has been included - 60101 - and information on the plaque to the Boer War casualty - Capt Herbert Sykes, of Cookridge Tower has been sent.

2. History enquiries continue to arrive via the websites.
Two interesting ones concern previous Rectors. An organist in the States contacted us re a hymn tune written by Arthur Standidge - did we know anything about him? Two correspondents have been interested in Rector Wm Henry Draper and have lead to us finding out so much more about this interesting gentleman....a write-up is promised.
